Eclipse Magazine Interview

By Michelle Alexandria For EclipseMagazine.com

So here’s the thing, a few weeks ago USA Network contacted me out of the blue and said hey, would you like to come down to Miami for a little Junket for Burn Notice. I was like hells yeah - even though I had no idea what Burn Notice was. But I’m always up for a free trip. Then after a few round of emails, I asked are they paying for it. Nope, had to pay for it out of my own pocket. But I was still going to go. After boning up a bit on the show (as much as I could - considering all the power outages in the last two weeks), I got even more excited. The show is just a really cool, fun riff on the “spy” genre. We had such a good time during the day and I got so much material that we’re launching a Burn Notice page later this week. And it’s been ages since there was a show set in Miami (that I watched.) So during the press day, we interviewed 10 different people and it was in the air. Jeffrey’s presence was felt throughout the day, he is the star of the show and everything is on his shoulders. The cast and crew spoke glowingly of him and when you meet him in person you can understand why. He’s drool worthy, funny, charming, and amazingly down to earth. Oh yeah, he even has a great dog.

Jeffrey Donovan: Alright, all of you should not be drinking any soda. No soda. No soda.

Panel: [laughs] Uh oh!

JD: How’s it going? Have you had a good day today, so far? You got to interview everybody exciting so far…

Panel: We’ve been waiting for you!

JD: It’s all downhill from me. All downhill.

Panel: Sharon Gless talked you up a lot.

JD: Oh, my mama. My mama. [laughter] Isn’t she amazing?

Panel: She said nothing but lovely things about you.

JD: She’s been like a mother to me down here. She is so great. Her and her husband, Barney – you know famous producer – they’re just so great. I wish they were my parents.

Panel: She seemed like she’s pretty much adopted you.

JD: Yeah, she has, she has. I’m filing papers next week.

Panel: Everyone said you don’t sweat, what’s the secret to that?

JD: [laughs] Who’s everyone?

Panel: Everyone. [laughter from all]

Entertainment Weekly Burn Notice Season 2 Review

By Ken Tucker

USA, July 10, 10 PM

The temperature in downtown Miami is a sultry 87 degrees. The sun is so hot and the humidity so heavy, a white pigeon lands on a sidewalk and keels over like a little drunk sailor, momentarily stunned. The star of Burn Notice, Jeffrey Donovan, walks briskly past this minor avian tragedy without breaking stride or concentration. Wearing a black shirt with white pants, large black sunglasses masking his face like a bank robber, he’s in full Michael Westen mode. As Westen, a CIA agent-turned-private eye, he will burst into a scene in which he frees a woman being held hostage by a bad guy.

Or something like that. No one on the set will reveal exactly what the plot of this, the third episode of the new second season of Burn Notice, is all about. But from the way Donovan’s Westen handles the villain — giving the thug an unexpectedly warm smile, wagging his head back and forth playfully and saying ”Can’t we just talk this out?” shortly before punching the dude — it’s clear that this is a classic Burn Notice moment: The hero breaks the tension and then breaks a jaw, leaving his nemesis as senseless as that pigeon.

”It wasn’t just me, right? It was hot even inside, wasn’t it?” says the 40-year-old Donovan a few minutes later, after walking a few blocks from the real restaurant where the scene was being shot to a Thai place, where he digs into a platter of vegetables. Explaining his series’ mixture of action and spontaneous goofiness, Donovan says between bites, ”This show is intense espionage with humor. Levity is important with this character. You’re watching someone who could kill, but chooses not to, and puts a little giggle into the situation — it’s like putting a smiley face on a shark.”

“Battlestar Galactica” Actress to Guest on “Burn Notice

Tricia Helfer, the sexy cylon “Number Six” from Sci Fi’s Battlestar Galactica, will join the cast of Burn Notice as “Carla” when the hit series’ second season debuts in July.

In the show’s first season, “Carla” was only known as the smoky voice on the other end of a vague, threatening phone call to covert-operations agent “Michael Westen,” played by Jeffrey Donovan.

The network said Helfer will appear in multiple episodes where she could prove to “hold the key to Westen’s burn notice.” Burn notices are missives issued by intelligence agencies to discredit or announce the dismissal of agents who are considered to have become unreliable.

Burn Notice was created, written and is executive produced by Matt Nix.

The series averaged a 2.5 rating and 3.74 million viewers through the first six episodes in its debut season and will include 13 episodes this season.

“Stargate” Actor to Guest on “Burn Notice”

Stargate SG-1 co-star Michael Shanks (”Daniel Jackson”) will guest star in a four-episode story arc on the successful USA Network series Burn Notice, his official Web site is reporting.

Shanks will play Victor, described by Spoiler TV as “a spy who has been working for the Burn Notice Organization (BNO) for some time. A well-traveled operative, who’s seen and done it all, Victor is every bit Michael’s [series lead Jeffrey Donovan] equal when it comes to knowledge and ability. But while Michael has some regard for human life, Victor is a wild card, who has no qualms about leaving collateral damage in his wake. Victor encourages Michael to embrace his new life as a burned spy.”

Shanks’ first episode will be “Bad Blood,” the sixth of the new season — currently scheduled to air on August 14, according to Michael Shanks Online.

In the meantime, Stargate fans can catch Shanks in the upcoming movie Stargate: Continuum, on DVD and Blu-ray July 29.

Burn Notice stars Jeffrey Donovan, Gabrielle Anwar, Bruce Campbell and Sharon Gless. The show returns with new episodes Thursday, July 10. Read more about the series at USA’s official site.
