Deep in the heart of the dot.com revolution where fortunes and lives are made with the click of a mouse, internet visionary John Elias dream of creating the internet application that will change the way mankind communicates. No borders, no boundaries . . . one world. With a little old-fashioned good luck, the help of an expert deal-closer, and a wealthy financier, John finds the necessary funding to launch Digital Dreams. Just as quickly as their first million is made, their good intention is replaced by the intoxicating success of fame and fortune, fast cars, and faster women. Caught in a spiral of deceit, John soon loses sight of his original vision and betrays his girlfriend. Now, John finds himself forced to betray everything he once held dear or risk losing it all. Will blind ambition topple his dot.com empire? Or will his one last shot at redemption bring him back to what's really important in life?
Bottom Line: This sturdily produced indie isn't particularly effective as a cautionary tale, because there's nothing in it that hasn't been seen before. However, Purpose is quite entertaining and should please renters who enjoy such stock market movies as Wall Street and Bailer Room. The similarities of Lazar's movie to those earlier hits are pronounced, especially in the relationship of the callow young tycoon to his seasoned, morally grounded father. Light has made frequent appearances on TV, but he's a relative newcomer to feature films, as are second-billed Donovan and ingenue Dodds, which probably explains First Look's decision to omit their names from the front cover. Instead, the names of supporting players Coyote, Hal Holbrook (as a millionaire rancher who invests in John's company), Mia Farrow (a barracuda businesswoman) and Paul Reiser (an iconoclastic college professor) are featured prominently. That has got to be a blow to Light's ego, but it can only help the marketing effort.
